empowering young minds...
One stethoscope at a time.
STUDENTS AND STETHOSCOPES
Students and Stethoscopes is a unique volunteering initiative designed to streamline a way for healthcare professionals to educate and inspire inner city schoolchildren by giving in-person talks about their careers.
our mission
To inspire inner city schoolchildren of low-medium socioeconomic backgrounds to pursue careers in healthcare.
Through this initiative, students with minimal exposure to the professional world of medicine are given early exposure, guidance, and first hand experiences to promote an early sense of self confidence, competence, and inspiration. Breaking down the survivalist mentality behind many families of low socioeconomic backgrounds, we aspire to empower young minds to believe they are capable of attaining any goal, may that be in medicine or wherever their developing passions lie. Serving as a catalyst for growth and self reliance, Students and Stethoscopes provides students with individualized steps that can be taken as early as elementary school to start paving their unique paths.
impact
students
Young students gain access to the inside world of medicine, beyond an unnerving doctor's appointment, through early exposure to real healthcare professionals and come away inspired to follow their dreams.
educators
Teachers are able to set their classroom apart with an augmented adjunct to their curriculum. Schools can integrate the real world by having professionals who have succeeded give first hand advice to their students.
volunteers
Volunteers experience the satisfaction of connecting with and inspiring the youth of our communities and showcasing their unique journies. They have the opportunity to be the mentor figure that they may have lacked in their own journey.
community
Communities are uplifted as their children gain the tools to secure brighter, more endeavorous futures. The impact on the community if even one student is inspired to pursue a career in healthcare expands tremedously.

disparities in heathcare: the importance of representation in healthcare settings
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), racial and ethnic minority groups in the United States experience higher rates of illness including diabetes, hypertension, obesity, asthma, heart disease, and even death, when compared to their White counterparts.
A meta-analysis performed in the article "Diversity improves performance and outcomes" from Howard University College of Medicine, showed that "more diverse medical teams gave more accurate diagnoses, had higher patient satisfaction, and saw greater compliance." (L.E. Gomez, MD, et al., 2019)
Encouraging underserved, minority youth to consider the medical field when they are older has massive implications beyond the students themselves. In addition to breaking generational cycles of job complancency and survivalism, it means making strides towards reducing illnesses and comorbidities in the masses that are predisposed to them at higher rates than their White, privileged counterparts. Not only do certain minority groups carry a higher predisposition to illnesses such as those mentioned above, they are more likely to suffer at an increased rate and even succumb to their illnesses without adequate representation in their healthcare treatment teams.
